FAQ
If my teen is flying, when should I schedule the flight?
Please note we only facilitate pick-up from Kansas City International Airport. We are not able to pick up or drop off teens at bus or train stations.
Do not book airline tickets before receiving your confirmation for registration. As ATC contracts with a local shuttle company for specific times on specific dates, all flights need to arrive and depart within the times set. We are unable to accommodate any flights outside of our scheduled shuttle runs. Airport shuttle service is $30 round-trip (no discount for one-way) and should be paid after registration confirmation is received. If your teen's flight is booked outside of the set times, you will need to book a taxi. Do not book airline tickets before receiving your confirmation for registration.
Is there anything I need to know if my teen is flying as a minor?
It is the parent’s responsibility to check with your particular airline regarding travel by minors. United Airlines and Southwest Airlines have very lenient unaccompanied minor policies, and thus are the easiest for us to work with. Different airlines have different regulations regarding the age they consider a minor. We have had problems in the past with not being allowed to pick up teens under a certain age without proper documentation. You are responsible to determine these rules, to make sure the proper documentation is in place and to contact us with any special circumstances at awakening@ihop.org.
Is transportation to and from the airport available?
ATC schedules shuttles to transport students from the airport to ATC. This is not a regular function of IHOP–KC. We only run the shuttle on the specified dates, at the specified times, for the purpose of ATC. Arriving flights must arrive between 8 AM and 3 PM on the day that camp begins. Departing flights must depart between 8 AM and 3 PM on the day that camp ends. We are unable to accommodate any flights outside of our scheduled shuttle runs. If you require this shuttle service, we charge $30 round trip (no discount for one way). This money should be sent in advance in the same manner you sent the deposit. We also need your flight information after your registration has been finalized.
What is the lodging like?
Lodging is dormitory style at a local hotel. Linens are not provided, all teens will need a sleeping bag.
Sleeping bag, pillow, battery operated alarm clock, watch, Bible, pens, notebook, insect repellent, sunblock (the higher SPF, the better), water bottle, pre-addressed/stamped envelopes and stationery, sneakers, casual shoes, shorts, pants, shirts, socks, underwear, pajamas, a light sweatshirt or jacket (AC can be quite chilly), toiletries, towels (1 for shower and 1 for activities), swimsuit (girls: one piece or tankini with dark t-shirt to cover midriff), flip flops for shower. Plan on packing enough clothing for the full two weeks unless you choose to purchase the Laundry Service at registration. Bring clothing for both outdoor activities (which can get dirty) and indoor activities. All baggage is subject to search. Label everything! Many teens bring similar items to ATC, making it difficult to sort personal belongings when it’s time to go home. It is always best to label all items with your name (use labels or permanent marker). Don’t plan on buying new clothing for camp. During camp it is hard to take care of new clothing. Expect to return home needing to do laundry.
What should I not bring?
Hair dye, fireworks, firearms, piercing supplies, mobile phones, MP3 players, iPods, laptops, CD players, or any entertainment devices. All baggage subject to search. ATC is an unplugged camp dedicated to calling teens to unplug from the world and spend a part of their summer radically pursuing Jesus with a group of like-minded comrades.
Is tranportation provided during ATC?
All transportation required while at ATC will be provided by ATC through our shuttles. We also cannot, and will not allow teens to drive other teens. Therefore, it is the policy of ATC that teens driving to Kansas City for the internship park their vehicle and not use them during the time of the internship.
